Founded in 1919, Brescia University College is Canada’s only women’s university. In addition to providing an educational experience focused on academic excellence, the university provides students with mentorship and leadership. Brescia University College is part of the Roman Catholic community in London, Ontario, and its roots go back to the Ursuline Sisters. Brescia is affiliated with the nearby Western University. Students can attend classes on both campuses and take two-fifths of their courses at Western. A Brescia degree is awarded to graduates of Western, so it is important to know how to apply for admission. While many of Brescia’s students are from Canada, some international students join the campus as well.
Women’s colleges have historically been places of sisterhood and mentorship. The AUW is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young women and providing them with the tools they need to become successful in their personal and professional lives. For example, a program called Pathways to Promise invites women working in garment factories in Bangladesh to participate in a program that tests their skills on the factory floor.
Besides the aforementioned academic opportunities, the Brescia College is known for its public speaking contest for girls in their 12th grade. Brescia’s annual event has been attended by representatives from universities across Canada. Approximately twenty-two women are chosen from 650 applicants to compete. Those who are selected are awarded an X-Ring, which is a symbol of a woman’s accomplishments.
